THE Readings

October 2024

On Christmas Eve in my family, we each do a reading – for years each person’s reading was set in stone. My mother was always the closer – reading T.S. Eliot’s “The Cultivation of Christmas Trees,” the most serious of the readings. In 2023 my mother decided I should be the one to read it. I deconstructed plaids – turning my handwritten version of that poem into a plaid, then printing it on silk habotai and organza, which I then naturally dyed. I used naturally dyed yarn as well as found-yarns to make a 'plaid' knitting through intarsia on a flatbed machine. I also made a 'plaid lace' by stitched various colors on dissolvable embroidery stabilizer.  Patching and weaving these three elements together, I made a piece where the poem is subtly embedded into the textile.
